Alturas County, Idaho History and Genealogy site debuts today. This website provides the researcher with an historical overview of the county based on the manuscript History of Alturas and Blaine Counties, Idaho, written by George A. McLeod; published in Hailey, Idaho in 1930. Included with it are histories of the towns and their early settlers. Since the county was settled in 1863 and the manuscript written only in 1930, the amount of information is limited, but with such limited information on this area of the country, what is provided in the town and other histories can be beneficial to researchers of those early settlers.

Included with it are official directories and military rosters. Since the county was settled in 1855 and the manuscript written only in 1877, the amount of information is limited, but the information provided in the town histories can be beneficial to researchers of those early settlers.

Naturalizations & The Civil War - Finding an Ancestor’s Records

An 1862 law allowed honorably discharged Army veterans of any war to petition for naturalization, without having filed a declaration of intent, after only 1 year of residence in the United States. The wording of the 1862 Act stated that any alien, age 21 or up “…who has enlisted, or may enlist in the armies of the United States….” It was designed to encourage enlistment during the Civil War. Aliens serving in the US military did not gain citizenship through service alone ……

Baker Family History
