Huguenots and Walloons were Protestants who fled from religious persecution to America. Huguenots came from France, the Walloons from Belgium. Many Americans and Canadians can trace their roots to these brave settlers who fled to America in the 17th Century. The first Huguenot refugees went to Prussia, the German Palatinate and then to America.

New York Orphanages Online

As early as 1653, New York City (formerly called New Amsterdam) recognized that it needed to care for the city’s minor children, widows, and orphans. There were many orphanages and orphan asylums in the 19th century. Many of these institutions were founded in New York City to care for destitute children of immigrants from Ireland and Russia, Germany and other eastern European countries.
