Caveat Emptor! Family Tree Forgeries

Many years ago, my cousin sent me a copy of her treasured family genealogy book after learning of my interest in genealogy. The family book was a fully-sourced typed manuscript of the history of one branch of our family that went back into the 1300s in France. Wow!

But Gustave Anjou, the “genealogist” who was hired to compile our family book was a master at combining families to create one related family tree. Sometimes, he took a valid family tree and without proof appended it to the family tree of his client. Or sometimes, he added wills, births, marriages, and deaths that were his inventions into existing records.

Find out if the family tree you downloaded off the internet could contain a Gustav Anjou forgery….
